The Label Design Challenge: The Origin & The Challenge
THE LABEL DESIGN CHALLENGE - The Origin & The Challenge
EPDA promotes collaboration throughout the entire value chain. We advocate a meaningful design approach that encourages the involvement of all project stakeholders from the very beginning of every project.
Working together with our partners from the packaging industry, we develop initiatives for and with the members of our community to share knowledge about new materials and technologies and to foster direct dialogue between designers and industry representatives.
This project originated from a discussion between our epda member Bea Suarez from MABA and Industry Partner Stefano Pistoni from UPM, who first proposed the idea of a masterclass in collaboration with KURZ and CCL.

Building on this initial idea, we introduced the concept with a theoretical learning session at the EPDA Autumn Event in Porto. Curated by EPDA, the session guided participants through the label design process. Uwe Melichar presented the overall design workflow, while Stefano Pistoni (UPM), Julia König (KURZ), and Christiane Spang (CCL) provided deeper insights into the specific roles and contributions of their respective companies throughout the project.

As learning only becomes truly valuable when it is put into practice, it quickly became clear that the theoretical session should be followed by a hands-on experience. The project team, together with the industry partners, embraced the idea of giving designers the opportunity to experiment with their ideas and see their designs brought to life through print.
At the same time, we wanted to create something meaningful - something with a lasting impact. That is why we set out to find a partner organisation whose work we could actively support.
With the help of EPDA President Sylvia Vitale Rotta, we partnered with the Order of Malta France, the French branch of a worldwide humanitarian organisation that provides social, medical, and humanitarian services in more than 30 countries - guided by the principles of charity and solidarity, the organisation delivers healthcare, first aid, and social support to the most vulnerable, regardless of their origin or political or religious beliefs.
From that moment on, the project gained even greater momentum. It attracted not only the enthusiasm of the EPDA team and the industry partners, but also the commitment of agencies and independent designers, who accepted the challenge and generously dedicated their time and creativity to support a meaningful cause.
