Personalization in digital direct printing on metal — how it works and the impact it has

It looks simple, but it becomes complex when you want to turn the bestselling product of a global brand into a “limited edition.” What happens behind the scenes? What requirements have to be taken into account? What does the creative process look like, and how can it be implemented technically?

Unilever, together with its agency Alvons Design, ventured into new territory here. Flexographic printing in combination with digital direct printing on metal! And all this centered around one of the most emotional topics imaginable — the players of the Germany national football team, as a special Rexona edition for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Brand and agency worked hand in hand on this highly exciting project and are presenting it together in this article. This is what winners look like (... sha la la la la!).
