7 times Pizza Hut reimagined pizza packaging
We all know what pizza boxes look like. They’re a design marriage of simplicity and function, without frills. Because they’re created to be temporary, used purely to transport a product safely and then be discarded.
No pizza company recognises the creative opportunities in playing with this standardised packaging like Pizza Hut. Its limited edition concepts aren’t just about customers having fun or extracting more value from packaging materials. They’re also a source of attention in an increasingly competitive market.
1. Vertical Pizza Box
For 2026, Pizza Hut decided to turn the pizza box on its head - by turning it on its side.
Created with creative agency Iris, this UK-based concept was purely a marketing play. Because we all know that you can’t carry pizza in a vertical box because it will slide to the bottom and become a horrible mess.
But Pizza Hut didn’t tell consumers that to start with. Instead it had people walking around the streets of London with the vertical boxes to get others talking and sharing theories.

2. Pac-man Arcade
In 2021, Pizza Hut teamed up with everyone’s favourite maze-based video character Pac-man to turn its pizza boxes into playable arcade games.
The boxes were printed with the instantly recognisable outlines of the Pac-man map. By scanning a QR code on the box, customers could access an augmented reality version of the game that was overlaid on the packaging.
Rather than immediately being discarded, this collaboration made the packaging a source of entertainment.

3. DJ Decks
For this 2016 UK collaboration with technology design studio Novalia, Pizza Hut really pushed the limits of interactive packaging.
The cardboard pizza box was printed with conductive ink DJ turntables which could actually be used to mix tracks. Users connected DJ software with the packaging via Bluetooth to bring in the music and used the touch-sensitive printed design to play with volume, pitch and cross-fading.
Only five of the special DJ deck boxes were created, with customers following clues online to their locations. But the unusual and technically-impressive nature of the concept meant Pizza Hut got a huge amount of attention without a mass rollout.

4. Flick Football
Over in the US, Pizza Hut tapped into local culture with its NFL-inspired flick football box design.
Medium pizza boxes came in a box printed with a game field on top, goal posts, football triangles and score cards. Two medium boxes together made a full football field, which helped increase order values.
The brand also set challenges for customers, including most creative flick, most consecutive flicks and longest flick, with the opportunity to win free pizza.
With a different pizza chain acting as the official NFL sponsor, this was a clever way for Pizza Hut to capitalise on the season and make itself part of the conversation.

5. ‘Blockbuster Box’ Projector
No - this was nothing to do with the late, great Blockbuster brand. But it would have been a good partner for this 2015 Pizza Hut and Ogilvy & Mather Hong Kong campaign which turned the pizza box into a mini projector.
The limited run design had a perforated hole in the side that could be pushed out and a lens that fit into it to create the projector. Customers scanned a QR code, chose a film from a selection provided by Pizza Hut, and propped their smartphone up in the box to make their very own mini home cinema.
Pizza is often linked with film nights so using it to elevate the experience was a brilliant branding move that helped drive traffic to Pizza Hut rather than its competitors.

6. Basketball Hoop
This concept has history with Pizza Hut first introducing it in the 90s. The brand brought it back in 2023, tapping into nostalgia for long-time customers and attracting new ones.
The pizza box was printed with a perforated circle that could be pushed out to turn the box into a basketball hoop and backboard. Mini basketballs were also on sale for $7 at participating Pizza Hut stores.
This is a great use of nostalgia to drive sales, but it’s also another great example of how Pizza Hut uses its packaging to add fun and entertainment. Rather than just being associated with pizza, its brand builds stronger bonds with its customers by bringing joy to their lives.

7. Round Pizza Box
This is probably the greatest reimagining of the list because it changes the one permanent feature of the pizza box - the shape.
In 2019, a Pizza Hut in Phoenix was the testbed for a new plant-based pizza topping and an innovative, round pizza box design. The new packaging design took two years to design in partnership with Zume.
By using a round box, Pizza Hut was able to reduce the amount of packaging required. It also used an industrially compostable material to make the design as sustainable as possible.
Although Pizza Hut hasn’t adopted this design everywhere, it proves that even packaging that has been designed one way forever can be reimagined.
