This was the topic of a session epda ran at Marketing-Day Germany, 5 December 2019, on behalf of the drupa touchpoint packaging initiative. Jack Stratten, Senior Trends Researcher from Insider Trends London, opened with a talk about consumer trends and inspired with selected cases of how retailers react to these. Following, three experts of the packaging value chain entered a vivid discussion about the opportunities and challenges the packaging business faces today: Loe Limpens – specialist in retail and private label packaging design, Francois Martin – senior consultant to the printing industry, Uwe Melichar – epda President & partner at design agency Factor, as well as Jack Stratten explored trends such as connectivity, sustainability and customisation in the context of how to increase the value of packaging at the same decreasing waste.
Moderator Claudia Josephs, epda General Manager, summarised: “What we need is sustainable packaging for an onlife world, which provides the consumer with transparent product information and a connecting experience. The challenges are to do more with less; to react quickly to consumer trends facilitated by even faster and more efficient packaging production processes; to target right and to customise offers taking into account demographic change. Our opportunities are to see circular econmoy providing new business; to educate the consumer and change his perception to more sustainability; to provide better collection, sorting and separation services; and last not least, to understand ourselves as members of the same value chain – requiring to work more closely together for a better output.”
