“The Corona crisis is not only a state of emergency due to health reasons, but also a great challenge for communication of individual countries and authorities.” says Jean Jacques Schaffner, owner of epda member JJSSCC in Switzerland. Just recently, he launched a poster campaign in collaboration with bz, the largest regional newspaper in the north-western region of Switzerland. “Many countries have limited themselves to the communication of facts and have advised more than motivated. The need for positive communication has also been completely ignored by design and communication professionals.”
Within 4 weeks, 107 designers created 227 designs and expressed their fears but also positive ideas. This large number of posters led to a major advertising marketer providing 300 poster sites free of charge, thus making a regional street gallery possible. In addition, all garbage trucks in Basel were decorated with 3 posters each. Even the design industry was carried away by the success. The private Basel graphics museum “Rappaz” is exhibiting 50 of the best posters for one month, in close cooperation with the Swiss poster collection of the School of Design.
“Perhaps this example of a very defensive design industry shows that ideas are better than discrete restraint. We as initiators were also surprised by the success of this campaign.” Jean Jacques concludes.
